## Who they are

In Epictetus's cosmos, Providence is the reasoning principle that steers the universe, and Zeus speaks within the Discourses as its voice, explaining why bodies, property, and weather were never placed in human hands. The tension is intimate rather than abstract: if the gods could not make your body and circumstances unhindered, they gave you instead the faculty of using appearances well. This reframes every early lesson on what is and isn't up to us, teaching the reader to stop cursing the wind and start tending the only possession that cannot be taken.
