Concepts
Ideas that structure Discourses on Livy by Niccolò Machiavelli — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Republican Liberty and Popular Government
Machiavelli extensively analyzes the structure of republican government, arguing that popular participation and the conflict between nobles and commons are essential for maintaining liberty, as seen in his defense of the Roman people's role as guardians of freedom.
Class Conflict and Political Order
The book examines the inherent tension between the nobles' desire to dominate and the commons' desire not to be dominated, showing how these tumults in Rome led to beneficial laws and institutions rather than chaos.
Virtù and Fortune
Machiavelli explores how human excellence (virtù) interacts with fortune, arguing that successful leaders and republics must adapt their methods to the changing times, as illustrated by the contrasting approaches of Fabius Maximus and Scipio.
Religion as a Political Instrument
The text demonstrates how Roman leaders used religious observances, auspices, and fear of the gods to maintain order, inspire soldiers, and manipulate the populace for political and military ends.
Leadership and Moral Character
Machiavelli compares different leadership styles—such as the harshness of Manlius versus the generosity of Valerius—and argues that extraordinary valour can compensate for extremes in cruelty or kindness, while pride and deprivation of benefits breed hatred.
Necessity and Reason of State
The book argues that when the safety of the country is at stake, no consideration of justice, mercy, or shame should intervene, and that rulers must sometimes employ harsh measures, including destroying rebellious cities, to secure lasting peace.
Historical Cyclicality and Human Nature
Machiavelli asserts that human passions and dispositions remain constant across ages, so studying past events allows one to forecast the future, as nations retain the same vices and virtues over time.
Ingratitude and Suspicion in Republics
The text analyzes why republics sometimes treat their great citizens with ingratitude, contrasting Rome's relative leniency with Athens' harshness, and advises princes and captains on how to avoid or survive such treatment.
