Chapter 1
The Pilgrim

Captain Hull, frustrated by a poor whaling season due to a mutinous hired crew, discharges them in Auckland. The ship sets sail on January 22, 1873, and by February 2 has been pushed eastward by strong winds.
Chapter 2
The Apprentice
This chapter introduces the crew and passengers of the Pilgrim, focusing on the fifteen-year-old apprentice Dick Sands, a foundling raised with the help of the Weldon family. It describes his character, skills, and deep gratitude toward Mrs. Weldon and her son Jack. The chapter also introduces the mysterious cook Negoro, whose past is unknown and whose demeanor makes Captain Hull uneasy. The voyage proceeds uneventfully until little Jack spots something in the water, prompting a sudden alert.
Chapter 3
The Survivors of the Waldeck
Captain Hull and the crew of the Pilgrim rescue five African-American men from a capsized brig, the Waldeck. The men, led by Tom, are free citizens of Pennsylvania who had been returning from work in Australia when their ship was struck by a steamer. Mrs. Weldon and Dick Sands help revive them. The chapter also introduces Dingo, a dog with a mysterious past and a strong aversion to Negoro.
Chapter 4
Dingo's Sagacity
The chapter explores life aboard the Pilgrim after the rescue, focusing on the characters' interactions and Dingo's mysterious behavior. Dick Sands is praised for his seamanship, Cousin Benedict obsesses over insects, and Dingo shows an uncanny ability to recognize the letters 'S V', sparking curiosity.
