## Who they are

Thrasymachus is the impatient challenger who refuses Socrates' usual question-and-answer politeness and demands a straight definition of justice. His thesis, that law is made by rulers for their own benefit and that injustice pays better than justice, is the sharpest provocation in the early books. Even when he falls silent, his argument is taken up by Glaucon and Adeimantus, so his challenge drives the Republic's long inquiry into why anyone should be just.
