## Who they are

Phaedrus is the enthusiast of rhetoric, so captivated by Lysias's speech on love that he carries the scroll under his cloak and practices it aloud until Socrates catches him. His weakness is charming and transparent: he wants a partner in his revels, someone to hear the words he cannot stop repeating. That eagerness draws Socrates away from the city and into the countryside, where the dialogue on love, madness, and the soul can unfold beneath the plane tree.
