## Who they are

Echecrates opens the Phaedo by pressing Phaedo for the whole story, admitting he has heard only vague reports and wants to know exactly what was said. His eagerness is the frame that turns a private death into a shared inheritance, and his Pythagorean background gives him a stake in the question of the soul's fate. He matters because his request makes the reader a listener too, drawing us into the room where Socrates argues and dies.
