Chapter 1
To Marcia, on Consolation
Seneca writes to Marcia, who has been grieving the loss of her son for three years, offering Stoic consolation. He argues that grief prolonged beyond reason is unnatural and that death is not an evil but a return to peace. He uses historical examples and philosophical arguments to encourage her to find strength and perspective.
Chapter 2
I
Seneca opens by encouraging Liberalis, stating that the book collects omitted material and emphasizes practical wisdom over obscure knowledge. He praises Demetrius the Cynic for advocating a few ready precepts over many unused ones, and argues that true happiness comes from mastering fears, seeking inner riches, and living virtuously for the common good.
Chapter 3

Seneca presents the Stoic maxims of Demetrius, emphasizing that nothing is evil except what is base and nothing good except what is honorable. He contrasts fleeting, shameful pleasure with the true, stable pleasure of a mind free from disturbance, and uses Alexander the Great as an example of insatiable desire.
Chapter 4
III
Seneca contrasts the insatiable covetousness of conquerors like Alexander with the wise man's serene possession of all things, likening the wise to the immortal gods who govern without arms.
Chapter 5
IV
The chapter addresses a Stoic paradox: if the wise man possesses all things, how can anyone give him a benefit? Seneca argues that ownership can be shared in different ways—like a king's rights over state property versus individual ownership—and that a wise man can receive gifts because what is his in one sense may be another's in another sense. He also defends against sophistical objections, such as the claim that the wise man would be a procurer if he owned courtesans, by showing the absurdity of such literal interpretations.
