Ideas that structure Democracy and Social Ethics by Jane Addams — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Morality vs. Individual Morality
The book argues that traditional individual and family-based ethics are insufficient for modern democratic society, which demands a broader social morality that considers the welfare of the entire community.
Democracy and Social Equality
Addams explores how democracy requires genuine social equality, not just political rights, and critiques the class divisions and power imbalances that undermine democratic ideals in charitable and industrial relations.
Charity and Paternalism
The book examines the ethical problems of traditional charity, highlighting the tension between the benefactor's desire to help and the demeaning, unequal relationship it creates, advocating for a more democratic and empathetic approach.
Family Obligation vs. Social Claim
Addams discusses the conflict between the duties of family life and the growing social responsibilities of individuals, particularly women, who seek to contribute to the broader community beyond the household.
Industrial Relations and Labor
The text critiques the individualistic management of industry and the exploitation of workers, arguing for democratic representation in the workplace and a recognition of labor's social value and collective power.
Education and Social Value
Addams argues that education must connect children's experiences to social life, freeing their potential and preparing them for democratic citizenship, rather than merely teaching rote skills or abstract knowledge.
Political Corruption and Representation
The book analyzes how political machines and corrupt aldermen gain power by responding to the immediate, individual needs of poor constituents, while reform movements often fail by focusing on methods rather than social welfare.
Gender Roles and Women's Work
Addams examines the restrictive expectations placed on women, particularly daughters, and the tension between domestic duties and the desire to engage in public life and social reform.
Immigration and Cultural Adjustment
The book explores the challenges faced by immigrant families, especially Italian peasants, as they adapt to urban American life, and critiques the failure of schools and society to integrate them meaningfully.
