Concepts
Ideas that structure Democracy and Education by John Dewey — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Democracy and Education
The book argues that education is the fundamental means of sustaining a democratic society, requiring the development of critical thinking, social participation, and equal opportunity for all individuals.
Education as Life and Growth
Education is presented not as preparation for a distant future but as a continuous process of living and growth, where the aim is more education and the enrichment of present experience.
Social Function of Education
Education is a social process through which communities transmit their values, beliefs, and practices to the young, ensuring social continuity and renewal through shared experience.
Experience and Learning by Doing
True learning arises from active engagement with the environment, where knowledge is gained through practical, purposeful activity rather than passive reception of abstract information.
Division of Labor and Leisure
The historical separation between liberal education for leisure and vocational training for labor reflects class divisions, which a democratic education must overcome by integrating thought and practice.
Environment and Indirect Education
Education occurs indirectly through the environment; schools must be deliberately designed as simplified, purified social environments that shape habits, dispositions, and values.
Unity of Knowledge and Action
The book critiques the dualism between theory and practice, arguing that genuine knowledge emerges from experimental inquiry and is validated through its application in real-life situations.
Critique of Traditional Curriculum
Dewey criticizes the fragmented, subject-centered curriculum that isolates studies from life, advocating instead for integrated learning organized around occupations and student interests.
