# How does Demian develop the theme of Critique of Modern Society and Herd Mentality?

> Demian by Hermann Hesse

## Answer

Demian by Hermann Hesse develops Critique of Modern Society and Herd Mentality across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book condemns the conformity, fear, and hollow ideals of contemporary European society, viewing its institutions (schools, churches, student clubs) as 'formations of herds' that suppress true individuality.

Sinclair's isolation and contempt for his schoolmates reflect a rejection of conventional social norms and the herd.

Sinclair observes the empty, conformist student life and hears a critique of the herd-like behavior of young Europeans.
