# What Sexuality and the Awakening of Puberty means in Demian

> The protagonist's sexual awakening is portrayed as a disruptive, forbidden force that shatters childhood innocence, yet it is also a vital part of the dark world that must be integrated for self-realization.

## Explanation

The protagonist's sexual awakening is portrayed as a disruptive, forbidden force that shatters childhood innocence, yet it is also a vital part of the dark world that must be integrated for self-realization.

Sinclair describes the 'slowly awakening sense of sex' as an enemy and destroyer, and the double life he leads as his instincts conflict with the sanctioned world.

Sinclair's encounter with Beck and the stories of Mrs. Jaggelt mark a crude introduction to adult sexuality, contrasting with his idealized notions.
