# Mother Eve — Demian character guide

> Mother Eve in Demian by Hermann Hesse.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mother, Eve

**First appearance:** 0007-vii-mother-eve

## Snapshot

Demian's mother, a tall and queenly woman who seems to belong to an older, wiser order of being, she embodies the mystery Sinclair has been chasing.

## Who they are

Mother Eve lives with her son in a quiet house with a garden, and when Sinclair finally meets her she seems less a person than a presence—trees hush as she passes and stars gather over her head. She tells Sinclair that he has learned to call her, and that she will come when he needs someone who bears the sign. Her calm, maternal authority gives Sinclair an image of the wholeness he is groping toward, and her household becomes the still center of his later spiritual life.
