    I: Vocation

    Paul Pennyfeather is sent down from Oxford for indecent behavior, leading his guardian to cut off his allowance and insist he find work. Through a scholastic agent, Paul secures a position as a junior assistant master at Llanabba Castle School in Wales, despite lacking qualifications. He interviews with Dr. Fagan, who hires him at a reduced salary of £90 per year after learning of Paul's dismissal.

    II: Llanabba Castle

    Paul Pennyfeather arrives at Llanabba Castle, a school with a deceptive facade, and is introduced to the chaotic and disreputable staff, including Captain Grimes and Mr. Prendergast, as well as the eccentric Dr. Fagan and his daughters.

  3. Chapter 3

    III: Captain Grimes

    Paul Pennyfeather has dinner with the boys at Llanabba Castle, where he meets Peter Beste-Chetwynde and learns about the school's eccentricities. Afterward, Captain Grimes takes Paul to the local pub and reveals his engagement to Flossie Fagan, his history of repeatedly 'landing in the soup,' and how his public-school background has always saved him from disaster.

  4. Chapter 4

    Mr. Prendergast

    Paul is awakened by Peter Beste-Chetwynde, who informs him about the single bathroom for masters. Paul takes a bath before Mr. Prendergast, causing tension. Later, Mr. Prendergast confides in Paul about his past as a clergyman who resigned due to profound doubts about why God created the world, leading to his current position at Llanabba.

  5. Chapter 5

    Discipline

    Paul faces the chaos of Llanabba Castle's morning prayers and his first classroom experience, where he struggles to maintain order among unruly boys. He receives advice from Grimes and Mr. Prendergast, and later learns from Peter Beste-Chetwynde that the boys view him favorably, while Peter also shares suspicions about the butler Philbrick's true identity.
