# Darby O'Gill — Darby O’Gill and the Good People character guide > Darby O'Gill in Darby O’Gill and the Good People by Herminie Templeton Kavanagh. **Role:** major **Also known as:** William Allingham Darby O'Gill, Lord Darby O'Gill, O'Gill **First appearance:** 0001-the-fairies ## Snapshot A proud farmer and spellbinding storyteller whose stolen cow drives him to match wits with the fairy king himself. ## Who they are Darby is a Balinrobe tenant farmer whose pigs and beloved cow Rosie keep vanishing into Sleive-na-mon, pushing him from bluster into outright war with the Good People. His courage is real but so is his temper, and his six months among the fairies turn him into the parish's reluctant expert on their tricks. His running battle with the fairy king — and the warnings he gives neighbors like Barney and Cormac — anchors the book's early and middle tales. ## Relationships ### [King Brian Connors](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/king_brian_connors) _friendship_ Darby and King Brian share a deep, mischievous friendship built on mutual respect and countless adventures with the Good People. ### [Bridget O'Gill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/bridget_o_gill) _family_ Bridget is Darby's devoted wife, often exasperated by his tales but deeply caring and protective of him. ### [The Knowledgeable Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/the_knowledgeable_man) _professional_ Darby seeks the Knowledgeable Man's wisdom and advice, treating him as a respected elder and source of local lore. ### [Sheelah Maguire](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/sheelah_maguire) _social_ Sheelah is a neighbor and friend to Darby, often involved in village gossip and daily life. ### [Eileen McCarthy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/eileen_mccarthy) _social_ Eileen is a young woman in the village whom Darby knows and interacts with as part of the community. ### [Cormac McCarthy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/cormac_mccarthy) _friendship_ Cormac is a friend and fellow villager of Darby, sharing in local events and storytelling. ### [Maureen McGibney](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/maureen_mcgibney) _social_ Maureen is a village woman who interacts with Darby in the context of community life. ### [Wullum Fagin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/wullum_fagin) _friendship_ Wullum is a friend and drinking companion of Darby, often joining in his escapades. ### [Father Cassidy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/father_cassidy) _professional_ Father Cassidy is the local priest, and Darby interacts with him as a parishioner seeking spiritual guidance. ### [Bothered Bill Donahue](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/bothered_bill_donahue) _friendship_ Bothered Bill is a friend of Darby, known for his perpetually worried demeanor but loyal companionship. ### [Solomon Kilcannon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/solomon_kilcannon) _friendship_ Solomon is a fellow storyteller and friend of Darby, sharing tales and wisdom. ### [King Brian Connors](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/characters/king_brian_connors) _friendship_ Darby and King Brian share a deep, mischievous friendship built on mutual respect and countless adventures with the Good People. ## In the story ### [Darby O’Gill and the Good People](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/chapters/darby-o-gill-and-the-good-people) The protagonist, a farmer who outsmarts and interacts with the fairy folk. ### [Darby O’Gill and the Good People](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/darby_o_gill_and_the_good_people_se/chapters/darby-o-gill-and-the-good-people) The protagonist who loses his livestock to the fairies, confronts them, and is captured.
