Chapter 1
Act I

Chapter 2
Scene I
The play opens with two gentlemen discussing the king's displeasure at his daughter Imogen's secret marriage to Posthumus Leonatus, a worthy but low-born gentleman. The queen feigns sympathy but secretly schemes. Imogen and Posthumus exchange tokens of love—a ring and a bracelet—before Cymbeline banishes Posthumus. The queen learns of a scuffle between Cloten and Posthumus, and Imogen expresses her disdain for Cloten. The scene establishes the central conflict of love versus royal authority.
Chapter 3
Scene II
Cloten, accompanied by two lords, boasts about a confrontation with a villain who refused to stand and fight. The lords mock him with sarcastic asides, highlighting his foolishness and obsession with Imogen's rejection of him in favor of Posthumus.
Chapter 4
Scene III
Imogen, deeply longing for her banished husband Posthumus, questions Pisanio about his departure and expresses her grief and unspoken farewells. She is interrupted by a lady summoning her to the queen, and she instructs Pisanio to carry out her previous orders.
Chapter 5
Scene IV
In Rome, at Philario's house, Posthumus Leonatus is introduced to a group of gentlemen including Iachimo, a Frenchman, a Dutchman, and a Spaniard. The conversation turns to a debate about the virtue of Posthumus's wife, Imogen, leading Iachimo to wager ten thousand ducats against Posthumus's ring that he can seduce her. Despite Philario's attempt to stop the bet, Posthumus and Iachimo agree to the wager and prepare to have articles drawn up.
