## Snapshot

A society beauty swathed in bandages after a treatment meant to perfect her, now suing the doctor she blames for her ruin.

## Who they are

Mrs. Close receives Kennedy and Jameson from a hospital chair, her social position and looks suddenly blasted, and she is certain her own vanity and Dr. Gregory's carelessness are to blame. Her refusal to return to the Murray Hill house, and her bitter insistence on pressing the suit, hide a grief that Kennedy suspects has a colder cause behind it. Her permission to question her maid opens the household to scientific scrutiny and turns a private misfortune into the case's central puzzle.
