# Inspector Barney O'Connor — Craig Kennedy Stories character guide

> Inspector Barney O'Connor in Craig Kennedy Stories by Arthur B. Reeve.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** O'Connor, Inspector O'Connor, First Deputy O'Connor

**First appearance:** 0001-the-silent-bullet

## Snapshot

The police inspector whose plodding arithmetic becomes Kennedy's favorite punchline—and the establishment foil against which scientific detection proves itself.

## Who they are

O'Connor never appears in the flesh in these early pages, but his name arrives first as a joke: Kennedy tells Walter his ability to add two and two is worthy of the Inspector. He stands for the old hammer-and-tongs method that Kennedy means to displace, the born-and-bred detective Walter defends. His offstage presence sharpens the book's central argument about who gets to solve crime.
