# Theodore Kavalov — Continental Op Stories character guide

> Theodore Kavalov in Continental Op Stories by Dashiell Hammett.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Kavalov, Mr. Kavalov

**First appearance:** 0175-this-king-business

## Snapshot

A man whose sense of honor was broken in Cairo, Kavalov now broods in a hill cottage while the men who ruined him try to decide what to do about it.

## Who they are

Kavalov is the wreck at the center of a strange standoff, a once-orderly man who combs his hair before shaving and now cannot be bribed or joked with. Ringgo, who handled him in Cairo, admits he has lost his grip on him, and the Op is warned not to make jokes. His cracked dignity and refusal of money turn a simple problem into something none of the professionals quite know how to solve.
