> Lord D—— in Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas De Quincey.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lord D⸺

**First appearance:** 0002-preliminary-confessions

## Snapshot

A nobleman whose household offers the narrator a respectable perch, and whose library and patronage quietly enable the habits that will undo him.

## Who they are

He stands at the threshold between the narrator's vagrant youth and his brief season of ordered, scholarly life, providing employment, access to books, and the ordinary dignities of a gentleman's estate. The relationship is one of patronage rather than intimacy, and its very respectability throws the narrator's secret indulgences into sharper relief. His household matters because it is the stage on which the narrator first learns to keep two lives running in parallel.
