# Vercingetorix — Commentaries on the Gallic War character guide

> Vercingetorix in Commentaries on the Gallic War by Julius Caesar.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0006-book-vii

## Snapshot

Expelled from Gergovia by his own nobles, this Arvernian son of a slain king returns with desperate levies and forges a Gallic coalition under one crown.

## Who they are

Vercingetorix is a young Arvernian noble whose father was executed for aiming at kingship, and he inherits both the ambition and the danger of that name. When his own uncle and the nobles drive him from Gergovia, he raises the needy and desperate, seizes power, and is saluted king by his partisans. He rules by terror as much as charisma—burning offenders, mutilating the wavering—and his swift coalition of Senones, Parisii, and coastal states makes him the first real threat to Caesar's Gallic order.
