# Ambiorix — Commentaries on the Gallic War character guide

> Ambiorix in Commentaries on the Gallic War by Julius Caesar.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0004-book-v

## Snapshot

An Eburones chieftain whose name becomes the reason Caesar builds a bridge across the Rhine—to deny him any refuge.

## Who they are

Ambiorix belongs to the Eburones, a people whose revolt and ambush of Roman legions make him a target Caesar cannot let slip away. When Caesar crosses the Rhine, one stated reason is that Ambiorix might not have a retreat among the Germans. He represents the kind of enemy Rome cannot pardon: one who struck, vanished, and left the legions to answer for it.
