# Duke of Denver — Clouds of Witness character guide

> Duke of Denver in Clouds of Witness by Dorothy L. Sayers.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Duke of D., the Duke, The Duke

**First appearance:** 0002-clouds-of-witness

## Snapshot

Stripped of his robes and standing small and pink in blue serge, the Duke faces his peers in the House of Lords with a dignity that even his accusers must respect.

## Who they are

As the accused, the Duke of Denver sits alone within the Bar, the only bare head among a scarlet assembly, listening to the Attorney-General rehearse the quarrel, the shot at three, and the vanished letter. His unease at hints of a motive beyond the alleged quarrel suggests a secret he will not surrender even to save himself. His ordeal transforms the family scandal into a public spectacle, forcing Lord Peter to work against the clock and the Wimsey pride alike.
