## Who they are

Maxime is Clerambault's bright, laughing son, quick to acquire Parisian wit and to spot the ridiculous even in those he loves. His admiration for his father is real but flavored with impertinence, and his mobile, observant mind dwells on surfaces rather than ideas. When war arrives, his youthful patriotic passion will put him at odds with the father he idolizes, making him the first and most intimate casualty of Clerambault's moral awakening.
