## Who they are

Black Isaiah is bound to the Cravats by service and something closer to devotion, and he refuses to be left behind when Yancey tells of the Run. Denied, he disappears rather than accept exclusion, a quiet act of will that complicates his place in the household. His presence threads through the family's frontier life, a reminder of who gets to choose their own going.
