# How does Chivalry develop the theme of Chivalry and Its Code?

> Chivalry by James Branch Cabell

## Answer

Chivalry by James Branch Cabell develops Chivalry and Its Code across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book explores chivalry as a rigid, all-encompassing code of conduct requiring a gentleman to serve God, honor, and his lady without reservation, while also revealing the tragicomic melee that results when this ideal clashes with human reality.

The chapter extensively discusses Chivalry as a pragmatic hypothesis and a worldwide code, emphasizing the triple homage to God, honor, and lady.

Heleigh's service to the Queen, his combat with Camoys, and his dying words reflect chivalric ideals of loyalty and sacrifice.

Prince Edward embodies chivalric ideals, seeking to protect Ellinor and atone for his neglect, while de Gâtinais represents a cynical perversion of courtly love.
