# What Art and Artifice means in Children’s Stories

> Wilde critiques superficial artistry and social pretension through characters like the Mathematical Master, the Town Councillor, and the Remarkable Rocket, who value appearance over substance.

## Explanation

Wilde critiques superficial artistry and social pretension through characters like the Mathematical Master, the Town Councillor, and the Remarkable Rocket, who value appearance over substance.

The fireworks are artificial creations that mimic natural phenomena, and the Rocket's self-dramatization highlights the gap between appearance and reality.

Art and Artifice is one of the patterns Children’s Stories by Oscar Wilde returns to. The chapter notes above are from this edition’s companions — open those chapters to see how the book stages the idea rather than treating the theme as a slogan.
