Concepts
Ideas that structure Children’s Stories by Oscar Wilde — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Sacrifice and Redemption
The book repeatedly explores how self-sacrifice leads to spiritual redemption, as seen in the Happy Prince giving away his jewels, the Nightingale giving her life for a rose, and the Giant's transformation through love.
Beauty and Suffering
Wilde contrasts physical beauty with inner suffering, showing that true beauty often emerges from pain—the Nightingale's blood creates the red rose, and the Star-Child's cruelty stems from his own beauty.
Social Inequality and Injustice
The stories expose the gap between rich and poor, with the Happy Prince seeing the city's misery from his pedestal, the weavers in the Young King's dream enslaved by poverty, and the Miller exploiting little Hans.
Love and Selfishness
True love is portrayed as selfless and sacrificial, while selfishness—embodied by the Miller, the Rocket, and the Star-Child—leads to isolation and moral decay.
Innocence and Experience
Children and childlike figures (the Swallow, the children in the Giant's garden) represent innocence, while adult characters often embody cynicism, cruelty, or hollow social conventions.
Art and Artifice
Wilde critiques superficial artistry and social pretension through characters like the Mathematical Master, the Town Councillor, and the Remarkable Rocket, who value appearance over substance.
Friendship and Exploitation
The Devoted Friend story explicitly critiques one-sided friendships where the powerful exploit the kind-hearted, a theme echoed in the Happy Prince's relationship with the Swallow.
