First appearance: Castle Rackrent
As a supporting figure in Castle Rackrent, Sir Murtagh Rackrent is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Litigious son of Sir Patrick, marries a Skinflint widow and dies from a fit of anger.
Sir Murtagh Rackrent loves the law as other men love hunting, keeping sixteen suits pending at once over roads, bogs, wells, and dunghills. His mania for litigation drains the estate as surely as any extravagance, and his childless death opens the succession to poor Condy. He embodies the family's self-destructive appetite for quarrels, the first clear sign that the Rackrents cannot hold what they inherit.
