## Snapshot

The dueling, gambling Sir Kit, who marries a wealthy Jewish heiress for her fortune and locks her away when she will not yield it.

## Who they are

Sir Kit Rackrent is the family's man of fashion and violence, forever in a quarrel or a wager, and his debts drive him to marry a rich English-Jewish heiress he barely tolerates. His wife's refusal to surrender her diamonds becomes a standoff that hardens into years of cruel confinement. His cruelty and his creditors together bleed the estate, showing how the Rackrents' vices—not misfortune—hollow out their inheritance.
