> Sir Condy Rackrent in Castle Rackrent by Maria Edgeworth.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Sir Conolly, Sir Conolly Rackrent, poor Condy, Rackrent

**First appearance:** 0001-castle-rackrent

## Snapshot

A barefoot boy of the avenue turned improvident master, he inherits Castle Rackrent and squanders it with whiskey, hunting, and fatal good humor.

## Who they are

Condy Rackrent rises from tossing marbles with the town boys to heir-at-law of the estate, beloved by tenants for his easy ways and open hand. His fatal flaw is that same generosity: he cannot refuse a drink, a bet, or a friend, and his fortunes slide accordingly. His courtship of Judy McQuirk, settled by a tossed halfpenny, shows how lightly he treats the gravest decisions, setting the estate's decline in motion.
