## Snapshot

The local woman Sir Condy courts and loses on the toss of a halfpenny, a small heartbreak that shadows his marriage and his ruin.

## Who they are

Judy McQuirk is the woman Condy Rackrent truly wants, and the halfpenny he tosses to choose between her and a wealthier match comes down against her. Bound by a boyhood vow never to unsay such a pledge, he lets the coin decide his marriage and his fate. Her loss is the story's quiet hinge: a private tenderness sacrificed to a gambler's superstition, prefiguring the ruin that follows.
