Captain Jinks, Hero
Sam Jinks, now a captain, is celebrated as a hero after the Battle of San Diego, but his internal disillusionment and the absurdities of military life begin to surface.
Chapter 3
I: A Bombshell
Sam Jinks receives a box of lead soldiers for his sixth birthday, sparking an intense fascination with military life and heroism. His obsession grows as he joins the John Wesley Boys' Brigade, eventually becoming its captain and moving his family to Homeville to pursue his military ambitions.
Chapter 4
II: East Point
Sam Jinks, now too old for the Boys' Brigade, convinces his father Colonel Jinks to secure him a cadetship at East Point through his uncle, Congressman George Jinks. He leaves Homeville with dreams of military glory, carrying his childhood lead soldier as a talisman. At East Point, he is ecstatic about the military environment, excelling in drills and cavalry. He and his tent-mate Cleary are hazed by upperclassmen, but Sam endures the hazing with a sense of honor and martyrdom, seeing it as a rite of passage.
Chapter 5
III: Love and Combat
Sam Jinks navigates the social hierarchy at East Point, developing a crush on a mysterious young woman, Miss Hunter, while also being forced into a brutal boxing match with upperclassman Starkie. After the fight, Sam ends up in the hospital, delirious and feverish, where he reflects on his hazing with misplaced pride and a desire for visible proof of his suffering.
