Concepts
Ideas that structure Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Justice and Injustice
The book explores the miscarriage of justice through Peter Blood's wrongful conviction for treason and his subsequent transformation into a pirate, highlighting how systemic injustice can drive innocent men to outlawry.
Honor and Identity
Captain Blood struggles to maintain his personal honor and gentlemanly conduct despite being labeled a thief and pirate, particularly in his relationship with Arabella Bishop, who represents the civilized world that rejects him.
Love and Redemption
Blood's love for Arabella Bishop serves as a purifying influence that restrains his buccaneering excesses and ultimately motivates his return to legitimacy, showing love as a force for moral redemption.
Rebellion and Authority
The narrative contrasts the doomed Monmouth Rebellion with Blood's later successful defiance of Spanish and French authority, examining when rebellion is justified and how power corrupts legitimate authority.
Fate and Free Will
Blood frequently invokes classical references and speaks of destiny, yet the story shows him actively choosing his path—from medicine to piracy to royal service—suggesting a tension between fatalism and personal agency.
Class and Social Mobility
The book examines rigid social hierarchies through characters like the aristocratic Lord Julian and the upstart Colonel Bishop, while Blood himself rises from transported slave to captain and eventually to royal governor.
Loyalty and Betrayal
Loyalty is tested repeatedly—among buccaneers bound by articles, between Blood and his crew, and in political allegiances—with betrayal often stemming from greed or fear, as seen in Ogle's mutiny and Levasseur's treachery.
War and Piracy
The novel blurs the line between legitimate privateering and piracy, showing how national conflicts (England vs. Spain, France vs. Spain) create opportunities for men like Blood to operate in a moral gray area.
