## Who they are

Stella sits among the drinking, smoking circle in the city chapters, trading barbs with Kabnis about sin, church, and the preacher who came around asking for some after they put her out. When Lewis's gaze settles on her, she draws her face back and tells him flatly she has nothing for him, refusing to be the mirror for his hunger. Her guardedness — sharpened by Jim's violence toward Clover and by the men's easy talk — makes her a quiet measure of what the party's laughter costs the women in the room.
