He lashes out at the old preacher Father John, at the white men who patronize him, at the friends who try to steady him, because their calm only sharpens his sense of being an atom of dust in agony on a hillside. His struggle to reconcile the Northern self he thought he was with the Southern self he cannot escape drives the book's final movement.
