## Who they are

Carrie K. stands between Ralph Kabnis and old Father John in a cellar room, restraining Kabnis's contempt while coaxing the deaf man's broken words about sin out into the air. When Kabnis crumples, ashamed and exhausted, she takes his hot cheeks in her palms and lets him kneel against her, her tenderness cutting through his rage.
