# Why is Candide expelled from the castle?

> Candide by Voltaire

## Answer

Candide is caught kissing Cunégonde, the Baron’s daughter — a breach of class and propriety under Pangloss’s earlier permission that noses exist for spectacles cannot protect him. The Baron kicks Candide out physically, beginning his wanderings. The expulsion satirizes feudal order: illegitimate nephew may study philosophy but not touch nobility.

Voltaire launches plot and theme in one stroke: love and class collide; optimism meets power. Every later reunion with Cunégonde remembers this first exile. Students should connect expulsion to baron’s later refusal to let Candide marry her even after titles fall.
