# What is Pangloss teaching in Candide?

> Candide by Voltaire

## Answer

Pangloss instructs Candide that this world is the best possible because a good God must choose the best arrangement, and apparent evils serve hidden goods — noses were made to bear spectacles. His metaphysics is parody of Leibniz via classroom Latin tags. Every catastrophe becomes “sufficient reason” exercise while victims bleed.

Voltaire uses Pangloss as running joke and serious target: optimism that cannot be falsified is empty. Candide slowly stops believing yet still hears Pangloss at the garden. Teach by pairing doctrine with immediate plot counterexample — war after castle idyll, syphilis after romance.
