Candide · Question
What happens to Candide in Lisbon?
Answer
After earthquake and tsunami, Portuguese authorities hold an auto-da-fé — burning heretics to prevent further quakes — and hang Pangloss while whipping Candide publicly. James the Anabaptist saves Candide earlier on the ship but drowns; optimism meets church power at its most absurd. Candide then finds Pangloss alive, maimed, still philosophizing.
Lisbon chapters crystallize religious hypocrisy theme and suffering theme. Voltaire references the 1755 earthquake directly. Classroom readers should connect spectacle punishment to Pangloss’s unchanged doctrine — satire’s cruelest joke is unchanged mind amid wreckage.
