# How does Candide develop the theme of The Search for Happiness?

> Candide by Voltaire

## Answer

Candide by Voltaire develops The Search for Happiness across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Candide's quest for Cunégonde and a peaceful life drives the plot, ultimately concluding that modest, productive work ('we must cultivate our garden') offers the only reliable contentment.

Despite her misery, the Old Woman clings to life, reflecting the human tendency to endure suffering rather than seek death.

Candide experiences happiness in El Dorado but chooses to leave, illustrating the restless human pursuit of something more, even in paradise.

The chapter contrasts Pococurante's discontent with Candide's naive hope that possessing Cunégonde will bring him happiness, questioning whether happiness can be found in external possessions or relationships.
