# How does Cakes and Ale develop the theme of Artistic Integrity vs. Commercialism?

> Cakes and Ale by W. Somerset Maugham

## Answer

Cakes and Ale by W. Somerset Maugham develops Artistic Integrity vs. Commercialism across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book contrasts the genuine, flawed artistry of Edward Driffield with the calculated, self-promoting careerism of Alroy Kear, exploring how literary success is often shaped by social maneuvering and public image rather than pure talent.

Roy Kear's career exemplifies the tension between artistic ambition and commercial success, as he prioritizes popularity and self-promotion over literary greatness.

The narrator and Roy debate Driffield's literary worth versus his commercial success, with Roy citing sales figures and the narrator questioning enduring value.

Hillier's desire to capture Rosie's color to attract rich clients contrasts with his artistic ambitions.
