Bulfinch’s Mythology · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure Bulfinch’s Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Hubris and Divine Retribution
A central theme throughout the myths, exemplified by stories like Niobe and Arachne, where mortal pride and defiance of the gods lead to severe punishment, often involving transformation or death.
Love and Transformation
Love frequently drives mythological narratives, resulting in physical or spiritual transformations, as seen in Pygmalion's statue coming to life, Baucis and Philemon becoming trees, and the metamorphoses of gods and mortals.
Heroism and the Quest
The book is filled with heroic journeys and labors, such as those of Hercules, Perseus, Beowulf, and the knights of Arthurian legend, emphasizing courage, strength, and the pursuit of glory or redemption.
Fate and Free Will
Characters often struggle against prophecies and predetermined destinies, as with Oedipus or the fall of Troy, yet their choices and actions—like Ulysses' cunning—also shape outcomes, highlighting a tension between fate and agency.
Hospitality and Its Violation
The sacred duty of hospitality (xenia) is a recurring motif, with rewards for kindness (e.g., Baucis and Philemon) and severe punishment for inhospitality, as seen in the fate of the suitors in the Odyssey.
Jealousy and Revenge
Jealousy among gods and mortals frequently sparks cycles of vengeance, such as Juno's persecution of Hercules, Medea's revenge on Jason, and the bloody conflicts in the Nibelungenlied.
Mortality and Immortality
The contrast between mortal suffering and divine immortality is explored through heroes who seek eternal fame, gods who envy human love, and tales of death, the underworld, and apotheosis.
Cultural Transmission and Education
Bulfinch's work itself serves to preserve and transmit classical and medieval myths for modern readers, emphasizing their importance for understanding literature, art, and history.
