# Queen Guenever — Bulfinch’s Mythology character guide > Queen Guenever in Bulfinch’s Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** XI Queen Guenever, Guenever, the fair Guenever **First appearance:** 0002-bulfinch-s-mythology ## Snapshot Arthur's queen, whose grace holds the court together and whose private loyalties quietly strain the vows that make Camelot possible. ## Who they are Guenever moves through Arthur's hall as its social center — receiving wounded knights, judging insults done to her maidens, and dispensing the mercy that keeps feuds from hardening. Bulfinch shows her forgiving Edeyrn for a blow struck at one of her women, weighing the insult as much against Arthur as against herself. That instinct for the court's dignity is what makes her later entanglements so costly: the queen who keeps everyone reconciled cannot always keep herself so. ## Relationships ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _romantic_ King Arthur and Queen Guenever are husband and wife, though their marriage is strained by Guenever's love for Launcelot. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _romantic_ King Arthur and Queen Guenever are husband and wife, though their marriage is strained by Guenever's love for Launcelot. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _romantic_ King Arthur and Queen Guenever are husband and wife, though their marriage is strained by Guenever's love for Launcelot. ## In the story ### [King Arthur and His Knights](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/king-arthur-and-his-knights) Arthur's queen, whose love affair with Launcelot leads to the downfall of the Round Table. ### [The Training of a Knight](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/the-training-of-a-knight) Lady of the court who could be chosen as a knight's mistress. ### [IV: Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/iv-arthur) Daughter of King Laodegan, betrothed and married to Arthur after Merlin's arrangement. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/king-arthur) Not directly mentioned in this chapter; included as a placeholder for future context. ### [Guenever](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/guenever) Daughter of Laodegan, falls in love with Arthur, tends to him after battle, and is betrothed to him. ### [VI: Sir Gawain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/vi-sir-gawain) Mentioned as part of Arthur's court; present during the marriage of Gawain and the loathly lady. ### [Sir Gawain's Marriage](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/sir-gawain-s-marriage) Not directly mentioned in the excerpts, but implied as part of Arthur's court; no specific action in this chapter. ### [VII: Caradoc Briefbras; or, Caradoc with the Shrunken Arm](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/vii-caradoc-briefbras-or-caradoc-with-the-shrunken-arm) In the ballad, she fails the mantle test, causing the mantle to shrink and reveal her infidelity. ### [Launcelot of the Lake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/viii-launcelot-of-the-lake) Launcelot's beloved; her charms inspire his passion and many of his deeds of arms, and their mutual attachment influences the history of Arthur. ### [Sir Launcelot](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/sir-launcelot) The queen whom Sir Launcelot loves above all other ladies, and for whom he performs many deeds of arms. ### [The Adventure of the Cart](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/ix-the-adventure-of-the-cart) Rides a-maying with ten knights, is captured by Maleagans, and sends a ring to summon Launcelot.
