# Oliver — Bulfinch’s Mythology character guide

> Oliver in Bulfinch’s Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Oliver Roland, the brave Oliver

**First appearance:** 0283-a-roland-for-an-oliver

## Snapshot

Roland's sworn companion among Charlemagne's twelve paladins, the cool head whose counsel his hot-blooded friend keeps ignoring at everyone's peril.

## Who they are

Oliver stands beside Roland in the emperor's household guard, matched to him in courage but not in temper. Where Roland charges ahead, Oliver reads the ground, counts the enemy, and begs for caution—advice that goes unheeded until the horns sound too late. Their friendship is the emotional spine of the Charlemagne legends, and Oliver's clear sight makes him the reader's measure of what pride costs.
