Ogier enters the Carolingian court as a hostage for his father, a position that makes him vulnerable to the contempt of princes like Charlot. When Charlot sneers that a captive vassal cannot answer a challenge, Charlemagne rebukes his own son and frees Ogier on the spot, declaring that the man who saved his life is as dear to him as his heir. That scene establishes Ogier as a knight whose worth is measured by deeds rather than birth, and it launches him into the combats and adventures that made his name legendary.
