# Merlin — Bulfinch’s Mythology character guide > Merlin in Bulfinch’s Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Merlin Merlin, Merlin Ambrose Merlin, Merlin the Wild, Sage Merlin **First appearance:** 0002-bulfinch-s-mythology ## Snapshot Prophet and bard of Arthur's court, counted among the three principal bards of Britain and the architect of the king's strange beginnings. ## Who they are Merlin appears in Bulfinch's Welsh triads as Merlin Ambrose, son of Morfyn, called the Wild — a seer whose authority rests on verse and prophecy rather than arms. He belongs to the company of golden-tongued knights and bards who give Arthur's court its memory, the figures who know what has happened and what must. His presence in the early legends makes Camelot feel older than Arthur himself, built on counsel he provided before the king was born. ## Relationships ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _professional_ King Arthur and Merlin are king and advisor, with Merlin serving as Arthur's wise counselor and prophet. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _professional_ King Arthur and Merlin are king and advisor, with Merlin serving as Arthur's wise counselor and prophet. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/king_arthur) _professional_ King Arthur and Merlin are king and advisor, with Merlin serving as Arthur's wise counselor and prophet. ## In the story ### [III: Merlin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/iii-merlin) Son of an Incubus, saved by baptism; advisor to Vortigern, Pendragon, Uther, and Arthur; imprisoned by Viviane in a magical tower; communicates with Sir Gawain from his prison. ### [IV: Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/iv-arthur) Arthur's chief adviser; arranges the marriage with Guenevere, uses enchantments to aid Arthur, and selects knights for the visit to Laodegan's court. ### [King Arthur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/king-arthur) Merlin serves as chief adviser to Uther Pendragon, orchestrates the transport of Stonehenge, creates the Round Table, and transforms Uther to enable his union with Igerne. ### [Arthur Chosen King](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/arthur-chosen-king) Advises Arthur to seek aid from Brittany and uses enchantment to cause the rebel kings' tents to collapse. ### [Guenever](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/guenever) Arranges Arthur's marriage, leads the knights, uses magic to aid the battle, and reports Gawain's exploits. ### [Arthur (Continued)](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/v-arthur-continued) Arthur's advisor; saves Arthur from churls, enchants a knight, and guides Arthur to the Lady of the Lake. ### [King Arthur Gets a Sword from the Lady of the Lake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/king-arthur-gets-a-sword-from-the-lady-of-the-lake) Chased by churls, rescued by Arthur, uses enchantment to save Arthur, guides him to the Lady of the Lake's sword. ### [Launcelot of the Lake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/viii-launcelot-of-the-lake) Mentioned as the enchanter whose mistress, Viviane (the Lady of the Lake), rescues and raises Launcelot. ### [XV: The Round Table](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/xv-the-round-table) Fabricated the Round Table with thirteen seats. ### [XVI: Sir Palamedes](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/xvi-sir-palamedes) Speaks to Sir Gawain in the forest of Breciliande, charging the king to undertake the Grail quest. ### [The Britons](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/i-the-britons) Mentioned as one of the three principal bards of the island of Britain, also called Merlin Ambrose Merlin the Wild. ### [The Welsh Bards](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/the-welsh-bards) Mentioned as Myrddin, one of the oldest Welsh poets, though his attributed works are of questionable authenticity. ### [The Triads](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/the-triads) Listed as one of the three principal bards of the island of Britain, also called Merlin the Wild. ### [XII: Kilwich and Olwen (Continued)](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/xii-kilwich-and-olwen-continued) Referenced as Gurhyr Gwalstat, who speaks with animals and guides the quest. ### [L](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/l) Helped Arthur and Laodegan. ### [M](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/m) Listed as 'Merlin, enchanter' and cross-referenced with Myrddin. ### [R](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/r) Sage who instituted the Round Table for Pendragon. ### [V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/chapters/v) Referenced as the sage imprisoned by Viviane in an enchanted wood. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters/merlin - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/bulfinch_s_mythology_se/characters
