The young student engages Tony in conversation, displaying his scientific knowledge and liberal political views, which both fascinate and slightly unsettle her.

The medical student, shy and self-conscious. He walks with Tony, discusses his studies, and explicitly states he doesn't fit with the high-society crowd, choosing to sit alone on the rocks.

Articulates radical liberal views against aristocracy and Prussian rule, reveals his secret fraternity membership, and expresses a sense of social separation from Tony's class.

IX

Acts as Tony's confidant and critic, challenging her privileged worldview. He declares his love and makes a solemn promise for their future.

A Promise and a Plea

Though absent, he is the central figure of Tony's personal happiness and represents the path of individual choice, love, and a professional career (scholarship) opposed to the family's mercantile tradition.

Defiantly admits his feelings for Tony but is powerless against his father's authority and Grünlich's social claim. His romantic interlude is abruptly terminated.

Chapter XII

Absent, having left for Göttingen University. His influence is powerfully felt through Tony's memories of his words, personality, and the ideals he imparted to her.
