## Who they are

Ziethen is a powerful German light cruiser detached from von Spee's squadron to raid British shipping, and her captain von Lutz has brought her to Resolution for repairs after a collision. She is both a weapon of war and, in the novel's symbolic scheme, a kind of paternity — the hostile force that gave Albert his name and that he now must resist alone. Her presence in the lagoon turns a desolate island into a battlefield of one man against a ship.
