> Richard Saville-Samarez in Brown on Resolution by C. S. Forester.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Captain Samarez, Captain Richard E. S. Saville-Samarez, Saville-Samarez

**First appearance:** 0001-ii

## Snapshot

A decisive Royal Navy captain who detaches his fast cruiser to sweep the Galapagos, unaware that his old affair has left a son in the ranks.

## Who they are

Captain Saville-Samarez commands the battle cruiser Leopard during the early Pacific hunt for von Spee's squadron, and his instinct for independent action sends Penzance to comb the Galapagos. He is a man of prompt decisions who refuses to dwell on worst-case scenarios, a temperament that serves him professionally but has left private consequences he never confronts. His professional choices set the trap that will eventually close on Ziethen, and his unacknowledged paternity shadows Albert's story.
