An undisciplined German seaman who dodges the Commander's orders on Resolution's lava slopes and becomes the first to glimpse Brown hidden on the cliff.

## Who they are

Muller is a landing-party seaman who answers the blaspheming Commander with an inaudible reply and refuses to plunge into the cactus and rock until he must, keeping to the crest and dreaming of anything but water. His insubordinate dawdling places him where he can spot a suspicious speck on the cliff across the lagoon, making him the unwitting hinge between Brown's concealment and the German pursuit. As von Lutz fumes and the landing party bleeds on the slopes, Muller embodies the weary, thirsty, half-broken texture of the occupation.
